Paramount's Sonic 4 Cast: The 13 Main Actors Confirmed for the 2027 Sequel

On March 19, 2026, a teaser trailer hyping Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the fourth installment in Paramount Pictures' ludicrously successful video game franchise, hit the internet. Alongside with the tagline, "The countdown to chaos has begun" and a release date of March 19, 2027, the teaser revealed the return of Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, the appearance of the franchise's iconic chaos emeralds, and the inclusion of the hammer-wielding Amy Rose, Sonic's pink-furred main squeeze from the games. The teaser also confirmed that Metal Sonic, who was teased at the end of Sonic 3, would be one of the film's villains.

At the same time as the teaser electrified die-hard Sonic fans worldwide, Variety magazine also dropped the film's cast list, which included 13 names. Eight of these were returning cast members from the first three films, but that left five new additions to whet fans' appetites. Fascinatingly, only one of these actors was tied to a definitive character, leaving four of them -- including an Oscar winner, an Emmy winner, and two of the most unique names in modern comedy -- playing undisclosed roles.

Ben Schwartz Returns to Voice Sonic the Hedgehog

Unsurprisingly, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will see comedy superstar and voice actor extraordinaire Ben Schwartz returning to arguably his signature vocal role. Schwartz is probably best known in live-action for playing the hilariously dorky "pickup artist" Jean-Ralphio Saperstein in NBC's iconic sitcom Parks and Recreation.

However, in recent years, his distinctively snarky yet vulnerable voice has been a real boon to his career. Aside from providing the vocal and motion capture performances for Sonic, he has also voiced Leonardo in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dewey Duck in DuckTales, and The Shapesmith in Invincible.

Jim Carrey is Basically Retired, Apart From When he Plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik

After the bizarre one-two punch of The Bad Batch and Dark Crimes in 2016, Jim Carrey seemed to turn his back on big-screen roles. Then, in 2022, he announced he had retired from acting, disillusioned with Hollywood. Despite this supposed retirement, though, since 2020, Carrey has appeared in three major motion pictures -- Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, and 3.

Carrey seems to have the time of his life playing the wildly rubber-faced villain Dr. Robotnik, a character who plays to all his strengths as the best physical comedian, well, ever. So, in essence, if the guy is essentially retired, aside from when a new Sonic movie is being made, is it any surprise that he's once again returning for Sonic 4?

James Marsden is Back for a Fourth Go-Around as Tom Wachowski

Every furry speedster needs a best pal/father figure, and Sonic has that in James Marsden's erstwhile Tom Wachowski, the sheriff of Green Hills, Montana. Aside from being an X-Men alumnus, Marsden has starred in each film in the series so far, teaching Sonic and his superpowered friends life lessons, taking part in their adventures, and talking to donuts before eating them when they "get out of line."

This earned him the affectionate nickname "Donut Lord," or as Knuckles puts it, "Lord of the Donut." As for what Tom will get up to in Sonic 4, that much is anyone's guess, but he'll certainly have some pearls of wisdom for his furry extraterrestrial son along the way.

Keanu Reeves' Shadow is Back For More Edgy One-Liners

At the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow, a dark antihero voiced with deadpan perfection by Keanu Reeves, seemingly sacrificed himself alongside Dr. Robotnik to save the Earth from being destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon.

However, it was later revealed in a post-credits scene that he had survived the cannon exploding into smithereens, so it stands to reason that the John Wick star's services are needed once again for Sonic 4. Considering Carrey is also back as Robotnik, it seems fairly likely that he also miraculously survived the cannon's fiery destruction.

Idris Elba Returns as the Hot-Headed but Lovable Knuckles

Idris Elba's amusingly self-serious Knuckles has already proven to be a breakout character in the Sonic universe, and his popularity was rewarded with a spinoff Paramount+ TV series in 2024. It's currently unclear if another season of that show will ever materialize, but in the meantime, the character will be coming back to the silver screen in Sonic 4.

Although Knuckles was introduced as an antagonist in Sonic 2, those days are long behind the flame-fisted pink warrior, and he'll be firmly on Sonic's side in the battle against the army of Metal Sonics teased at the end of Sonic 3.

Colleen O'Shaughnessey is Still the Only Actor Who Can Play Tails

When bringing a video game/cartoon character to the big screen, the standard move is to cast a celebrity in the voice role, no matter which voice actor/s played the character before. This is how the likes of Reeves and Elba wound up playing Shadow and Knuckles, of course.

However, the creative team behind Sonic the Hedgehog must believe Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who has been voicing Miles "Tails" Prower since 2014 in various Sonic games and animated shows, can't be replaced by any big name, because she has held onto the role in all the live-action movies. Expect another customarily cute performance as the double-tailed tech expert in Sonic 4.

When Sonic and his pals are attacked by an army of robotic doppelgängers in the cliffhanger ending of Sonic 3, they are saved by a mysterious pink hedgehog. Fans knew this was Amy Rose, Sonic's longtime admirer in the games, and talk quickly turned to who would be providing her voice in Sonic 4.

It has now been revealed that Nobody Wants This star Kristen Bell will be playing the character, and this is pretty good news. Bell has a great track record in voice roles, having played Princess Anna in the all-conquering Frozen movies, as well as Priscilla in Zootopia and Molly Tillerman in Central Park.

Fans Will Get a Kick Out of Nick Offerman's Parks and Rec Reunion With Ben Schwartz

Nick Offerman has been on a roll in the last few years, delivering incredible dramatic performances in movies like Sovereign and Civil War, as well as a truly brilliant tragicomic turn as Chester A. Arthur in Netflix's Death by Lightning. His addition to the voice cast of Sonic 4 in an undisclosed role is interesting, though, because most observers believe he'd be perfect for bringing one fan-favorite character to life: Big the Cat.

To be fair, you can see where these fans are coming from, as Big is a stout purple cat whose imposing physical presence belies a kind heart and somewhat dim-witted nature. That sounds like classic Offerman territory. But hey, even if he is playing a different role, it will always be a blast to hear Ron Swanson interacting with Schwartz's Sonic in a big-screen Parks and Recreation reunion.

Could Sir Ben Kingsley Be Playing Metal Sonic?

Fresh off his triumphant return as Trevor Slattery, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's greatest actor, in Wonder Man, Ben Kingsley has signed up to voice an as-yet-undisclosed role in Sonic 4. Could he be playing the film's primary antagonist, Metal Sonic, a villainous cyborg version of the speedster created by Dr. Robotnik?

Well, while Kinsgley lending his Shakespearean vocal cords to one of the franchise's most deadly villains sounds undeniably appealing, there is one small problem: Metal Sonic doesn't talk in the games. However, as director Jeff Fowler told Polygon in January 2025, "That's not to say that once the story and scripting process begins, there won't be the question asked, 'What if we did give him a voice?'"

Matt Berry Will Bring Amusingly Dramatic Talents in Sonic 4

Another addition to Sonic 4's cast whose role has yet to be revealed is British comedic supernova Matt Berry, whose star has risen so much in recent years that he recently stole the show at the Academy Awards ceremony.

The What We Do in the Shadows maverick is famous for his quirky, exaggerated line deliveries, which tend to find him mispronouncing words or hitting bizarre emphases that no other actor would ever dream of. It's therefore amusing to think of how that style could apply to Sonic. Could he actually be playing Big the Cat instead of Offerman? It's certainly possible.
