Greece and Korea: A Timeless Partnership Celebrated on National Day

On March 25th, the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in the Republic of Korea hosted a distinguished reception at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul to commemorate the National Day of Greece. The event brought together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and cultural representatives, underscoring the enduring friendship and expanding cooperation between Greece and the Republic of Korea.

The evening began with opening remarks from H.E. Loukas Tsokos, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic in Korea, welcoming guests to the celebration. Marking Greece's National Day in Seoul, he delivered a message that was both reflective and forward-looking, honoring a nation's hard-won independence while celebrating a partnership that has steadily grown over decades.

At the heart of his remarks was the enduring spirit of the Greek people, defined by courage, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to freedom. That same spirit, he noted, resonates strongly with Korea's own history, forming the foundation of a meaningful and lasting friendship between the two nations.

A particularly poignant moment in this shared history is Greece's contribution to the Korean War. With approximately 11,000 personnel serving under the United Nations Command and 196 lives lost Greece's role remains a powerful symbol of solidarity that continues to shape bilateral relations today.

Now, as the two countries mark 65 years of diplomatic ties in 2026, the relationship has evolved into a dynamic partnership spanning politics, economy, and culture. From high-level government exchanges to growing cooperation in maritime industries and advanced technologies, the collaboration reflects both trust and ambition.

Beyond policy and trade, it is the human connection that stands out. Cultural initiatives, academic partnerships, and a rising interest in Greek language and heritage in Korea are bringing the two societies closer than ever.

Closing on a celebratory note, the Ambassador invited guests to experience the spirit of the occasion across Seoul, where iconic landmarks shine in the blue and white of the Greek flag a fitting tribute to a friendship that continues to flourish.

Following the Ambassador, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Mr. Kwon Oh-eul, congratulated Greece on the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence and thanked Ambassador H.E. Loukas Tsokos and all organizers of the celebration. He also acknowledged distinguished guests, including Lieutenant General Scott A. Winter, Assemblyman Kwon Chil-seung, and Vice Mayor Kim Byung-min.

Highlighting the significance of March 25, the Minister noted that it marks both the beginning of Greece's struggle for independence in 1821 and the Feast of the Annunciation in the Greek Orthodox tradition -- symbolizing hope and freedom. He praised the enduring legacy of Greece as the birthplace of democracy and a pillar of culture, philosophy, and the arts.

Mr. Kwon emphasized the historic bond between Greece and Korea, recalling Greece's vital contribution during the Korean War, when around 10,000 Greek troops the sixth largest UN contingent traveled 8,500 kilometers to defend Korea.

Their courage and sacrifice remain deeply honored, forming a foundation for the lasting friendship between the two nations. Concluding his remarks, the Minister expressed hope that the celebration would not only honor Greece's proud history but also strengthen cooperation and solidarity between Greece and the Republic of Korea.

The celebration also featured a special musical performance by the Chiron Orchestra, an ensemble of Hanyang University medical students, who played the national anthems of both Greece and the Republic of Korea, honoring the friendship and shared respect between the two nations.
